Starlink internet installation

Want faster, more reliable internet?

Ask us about Starlink internet installation

Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX. It is designed to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband internet access, particularly to remote and rural areas where traditional internet infrastructure is unreliable or non-existent.

How does Starlink work?

Starlink's system is made up of three main components:

  1. A constellation of satellites: Unlike traditional satellite internet, which uses a single satellite in a high geostationary orbit, Starlink uses a massive network of thousands of small satellites in low-Earth orbit. This is the key to its performance.

  2. Ground stations: These stations act as a bridge, receiving and transmitting data between the Starlink satellites and the broader internet backbone (the global network of data centers, fibre optic cables, etc.).

  3. User terminal: The user has a kit that includes a satellite dish and a Wi-Fi router. The dish is set up so that it has a clear "view" of the sky, and it automatically connects to the nearest Starlink satellites. The dish is a sophisticated phased array antenna that can track and connect to multiple satellites at once.

The lower orbit of the Starlink satellites is a game-changer. Their closer proximity to Earth means the data has a much shorter distance to travel, which significantly reduces the time it takes for a signal to go from the user's device to the internet and back. This is called latency.

Why choose Starlink?

Starlink's approach offers several key advantages, especially when compared with older satellite internet technologies and even some traditional land-based services:

  • High speed and low latency: The low-Earth orbit allows Starlink to achieve much faster speeds and significantly lower latency (around 20-40 ms) than older satellite internet. This makes it suitable for activities that require a fast, responsive connection, like video conferencing, online gaming, and high-definition streaming, which were often impossible with traditional satellite providers.

  • Availability in remote areas: This is Starlink's primary selling point. It can provide a viable internet solution to people living in rural areas, on boats, or in other locations that are underserved or completely unserved by fibre optic or cable internet.

  • Reliability: The network of thousands of satellites ensures that there is almost always a satellite in view, providing a consistent and stable connection.

  • No data caps: Most Starlink plans offer unlimited data, which is a major advantage over traditional satellite providers that often have restrictive data caps.

  • Quick and easy setup: The kit is designed for simple installation, and the dish automatically calibrates itself to find the best connection.
